The techniques of sniffing out a potential date vary wildly: some say, speed dating events, and as a result, people seem more easy-going and inclined to chat.
From naked dating to dirty Scrabble, singles nights and speed dating have been reinvented. Can these increasingly quirky events lead to lasting love? It was Friday night in London and I was attending my first singles event. When my friend suggested it, I had expected the evening to be awkward. After two hours of painful conversation with other guests, we eventually escaped, although not before our new friend leaned in for a bum grope.
I was unlucky at this mixer. It holds 55 events a year, including parties, skiing trips and bingo. The average number of party attendees doubled to more than between and , suggesting the events are more popular than ever. Meanwhile, more traditional event organisers are also seeing a rise in demand, with SpeedDater running 70 events a month across 23 cities in the UK. We do speed dating, but we also run parties, cooking classes and wine tasting.
People might be unsure about attending them, but then find they enjoy the face-to-face interaction. Lynn, a year-old life coach from Liverpool, turned to speed dating after becoming disillusioned with Tinder. You might have to meet a huge number of people to find someone you are actually compatible with.
Pheromone parties: Can you really sniff your way to love (or sex)?
A spritz of perfume or aftershave to conceal any dodgy odours before a date is not uncommon. According to organisers, the event has a scientific basis because pheromones — chemicals secreted by animals — are the trigger for attraction between the same species. However, Matthew Cobb, professor of Zoology at the University of Manchester, refuted claims that there was any science behind finding someone attractive based on their smell. He explained that humans had around four million smell cells each with a smell receptor made of protein.
On the one hand our genes that create the smell receptor proteins will shape which odours we can detect and, sometimes, whether we find them nice or nasty. The science behind finding certain smells attractive is debatable, but the power of scent seems to be firm player in the dating world.

The first round of Smell Dating is now closed for registration. Sign up to be notified about our next round! A: Smell is one of the most poignant and evocative experiences afforded by the human sensory apparatus. Also known as olfaction, it is our physical capacity for detecting and perceiving the molecules around us. It is mediated by specialized sensory cells of the nasal cavity, which can be considered analogous to sensory cells of the antennae of invertebrates.
In humans, olfaction occurs when odorant molecules bind to specific sites in the olfactory receptors inside the nose. These come together at the glomerulus, a structure which transmits signals to the olfactory bulb, a part of the brain directly above the nasal cavity and below the frontal lobe. From here, the signals are fed into the limbic system, where emotion and memory are processed, before finally passing into the language-processing frontal cortex. This particular neural pathway means that, unlike sight and sound, smell is interpreted first in terms of memory and emotion before being mapped to language.
Although much remains unknown about smell perception, this cognitive process may be the reason that smell is so hard to describe in words, and often thought to be subjective. As researchers Nadia Wagner and Adam Jasper observe, the difficulty with communicating smell is not due to the subjectivity of perception but in describing it in language.
This is evident in the English language, which has no specific vocabulary to describe smell and approximates olfactory experience using adjectives borrowed from the other senses. A: At Smell Dating we understand the metrics of compatibility are chemical; connection is a matter of intercourse not interface. The Internet has replaced fleshy experience with flat apparitions, avatars and painstakingly curated profile pics.

Smell is a vital part of sexual attraction for all kinds of animals including humans. We may be able to use smell to improve breeding programs by giving the female animal a sample sniff of potential mates and letting her choose the best one before introducing them.
Our new research found female marsupials paired with the male of their choice in captive breeding programs had a higher chance of becoming pregnant, a shorter time to pregnancy and may produce healthier young. Read more: Curious Kids: How do we smell?
But their latest endeavour thoroughly ‘bursts’ said envelope, with all its contents spilling well into the sphere of crazydom. Experiments have shown that opposites attract; we tend to judge potential sexual partners as more attractive if their MHC composition is different from our own. On the night, guests are numbered, given a paper bag as a head disguise, a paper cup for sniffing, and a scorecard.

Making our way to the sixth floor of Harrods to their Salon de Parfums , the press were abuzz with a slightly squeal-ing fandom not often witnessed at fragrance launches — and with good reason. Harrods had managed to persuade IFF to bring their much-envied Speed Sniffing event to the UK at last — a once-yearly occasion in which their top perfumers are given completely free-reign to create a perfume with no regard to a brand brief, cost of ingredients or mass-market requirements.
Usually, these Speed Smelling events are top-secret and open only to select members of the French press, granting them a mere seven minutes in which to listen to the perfumers talk about their creations, sniff them, ask a quick question and move on to the next. The first girl takes a whiff, curls out her lower lip and raises her eyebrows. Is that a slight grimace? Or a face of intrigue? She hands my kangaroo print tee over to a friend — a petit girl with an asymmetric bob and kind, welcoming eyes. This is not going well. When I first heard about the pheromone parties, I lifted my t-shirt up to my face and took a lungful of my scent before trying to work out if I was turned on by my own smell.
It got weird. Wedekind asked a group of male students to wear the same T-shirt to bed for two nights. He then asked a group of female students to smell the T-shirts and mark which ones they found attractive. Wedekind discovered that the female students were attracted to the men who smelt different from them. Thus pheromone parties were born.
